Sport is a joy

Schools and kindergartens exchange information about children's favorite games and sport activities. Older children create rules, pictures and presentations about their games. They also gather information about various sport disciplines and popular athletes from their countries. Children might also create puzzles and crosswords connected to sport, take photos or even make short movie clips about it.

What is fair play ?

Whats fair play- this is not an easy question, especially for children. On the other hand, you would be surprised by how much children know about sport and fair play. To check their knowledge, we set up an activity- children (aged 6) were asked to divide situations between those which are fair and those which are not acceptable. Situations were first brainstormed by the children and then, written on small strips of paper by teachers. Children put fair situations on the heart and unacceptable situations on the picture of a bin.

The Olympic torch

The Olympic Flame or Olympic Torch is a symbol of the Olympic Games.Commemorating the theft of fire from the Greek god Zeus by Prometheus, its origins lie in ancient Greece, where a fire was kept burning throughout the celebration of the ancient Olympics[citation needed]. The fire was reintroduced at the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam, and it has been part of the modern Olympic Games ever since.

In contrast to the Olympic flame proper, the torch relay of modern times which transports the flame from Greece to the various designated sites of the games had no ancient precedent and was introduced by Carl Diem at the controversial 1936 Berlin Olympics.

The Olympic flag

We have recently visited the Olympic Centre in Warsaw.

Do you know why there are 5 circles on the flag? What are their colours? What do these colours mean?

After visitng the centre, we know.

Vancouver 2010 - Polish medalists

Have you heard about any Polish medalists? In Vancouver 2010 Poland won 6 medals- this is the best result in the history of the Polish team in the winter Olympic Games. Together with our children, we chose two medalists that they admire most.

Adam Małysz- ski jumping
Justyna Kowalczyk - cross country skiing

LETS DO SOME SPORT

Take a look at pictures drawn by children from our kindergarten. Children were asked to draw their favourite sport discipline. It turned out, that Polish girls love figure skating, boys were fascinated by ice hockey. What are the favorite disciplines of children in your country?

The Old Bear Game (Poland)

This is a game that has been known in Poland for many years. My generation used to play it and now children in our kindergarten enjoy it too. The games starts when children sing a song about a bear: The old bear is sleeping like a log. We are afraid of the bear, we tiptoe around it. When he wakes up, he's going to eat us. Children sing the song and walk in a circle. One child sits in the centre of the circle, pretending that it is asleep. As soon as they reach the words: "he's going to eat us" the child in the centre suddenly jumps and starts to chase other children who run around the room.

The Monument Game

Let me tell you about a game that our children love to play. The rules are very simple: children run around a room while music is playing in the background. Suddenly, the music is stopped- as soon as it happens children have to stop and they can't move an inch. After a while, music is played again. When it is stopped again, children have to stop but in a different position. This game is perfect for younger children (3-4)
